10th Century Zurich gained town status

1218 Zurich becomes a free city under the Holy Roman Empire.

1291 Swiss Confederation is founded

1336 Government is overthrown by Rudolf Brun and Guild Constitution is adopted

1351 Zurich joins Swiss Confederation.

1467 Purchase of Winterthur from the Hapsburgs expanded Zurich to the Rhine.

1519 Huldrych Zwingli starts Swiss Protestant Reformation, first Swiss city to do it.

1529 Zurich Bible published; First complete translation of the Bible in German.

1648 Swiss Declaration of Independence

19th Century Zurich evolves as the main Swiss centre for commerce and transport.

1833 University of Zurich founded. First university in Europe to accept women students.

1835 Steamships charted the water of Lake Zurich.
